Overview
Redevelopment
of Brownfield land has been identified as an essential component to
the achievement of the challenge of sustainable urban regeneration.
However, the literature is filled with examples where redevelopment
of brownfield sites has been unsustainable, as a result of failing
to assess the environmental, social, economic and physical impacts
of the various projects holistically, as well as to consider the long
term impacts of Brownfield Regeneration Projects (BRP) in general.
Therefore,
this project developed a Sustainability Indicator Framework (SIF)
which allows for the assessment of Brownfield Regeneration Projects
(BRP) at each phase of a sites life-cycle from design and planning
right through to operation. The research focused on the small, site
specific scale and explores the creation of an implementable, practical
framework, which will assist the assessment of BRP sustainability
at site level.
Therefore,
this research also investigated current processes through which the
various stakeholders including Local Authorities and developers currently
employ to evaluate the sustainability of their brownfield projects
in order to try and incorporate them in the new indicator framework.
